Maceo Webcast #35 - The Funk of Jon Cleary

  Maceo Musiciology Webcast #35
Mace2theO & Purpleblues
 "The Funk of Jon Cleary"

Mace2theO and Purpleblues are proud to feature the funky grooves of Jon Cleary - as PB says, " a man whose music deserves a broader platform"

Jon Cleary is a funk and R&B musician born in Kent, England and bred in New Orleans.  Cleary is a triple threat, combining soulful vocals, masterful piano skills, and a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks and sharp lyrics. Originally a guitarist, he balances a career performing on solo piano, with noted funk band The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, and as a notorious hired gun with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and John Scofield.

After starting out as a sideman, Cleary began writing his own material and formed his own band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen with Cleary on keyboard and vocals; Derwin"Big D" Perkins on guitar; Cornell C. Williams on bass and backup vocals; and Eddie Christmas on drums. All of the band members, except for Cleary, were born in New Orleans.

Rolling Stone wrote: "Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own, but Cleary’s full combo R&B is as broad, deep and roiling as the Mississippi river, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary’s vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-Meters roll of his Gentlemen."

Maceo Webcast #30b - Old School Grooves (Xtnd)

Mace2theO Musicology Webcast #30b - Old School Grooves Xtnd

This funky little webcast got a lost a bit as part of the 30th Webcast series so it has been extended with more 70's grooves and now given it's own release.

Groove is the sense of propulsive rhythmic "feel" or sense of "swing" created by the interaction of the music played by a band's rhythm section (drums, electric bass or double bass, guitar, and keyboards). Musicologists have argued that a "groove" is an "understanding of rhythmic patterning" or "feel" and "an intuitive sense" of "a cycle in motion" that emerges from "carefully aligned concurrent rhythmic patterns" that sets in motion dancing or foot-tapping on the part of listeners. Maceo Webcast #32 - Earth Wind & Fire

Maceo Musicology Webcast #32 -  Earth Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Lead singer Philip Bailey gave EWF an extra dimension with his talent for crooning sentimental ballads in addition to funk workouts; behind him, the band could harmonize like a smooth Motown group, work a simmering groove like the J.B.'s, or improvise like a jazz fusion outfit. Plus, their stage shows were often just as elaborate and dynamic as George Clinton's P-Funk empire.

More than just versatility for its own sake, EWF's eclecticism was part of a broader concept informed by a cosmic, mystical spirituality and an uplifting positivity the likes of which hadn't been seen since the early days of Sly & the Family Stone. Tying it all together was the accomplished songwriting of Maurice White, whose intricate, unpredictable arrangements and firm grasp of hooks and structure made EWF one of the tightest bands in funk when they wanted to be. Not everything they tried worked, but at their best, Earth, Wind & Fire seemingly took all that came before them and wrapped it up into one dizzying, spectacular package.

As opposed to a greatest hits, the webcast gives you a taste of EWF in the studio, EWF as producers of other artists, and EWF live in concert

Special thanks to CKJ 505 for the cool cover art work...and suggesting this webcast!

Enjoy
