Mace2theO Musicology Webcast #1

Mace2theO Musicology Webcast #1

Now available for the first time here at EMF Radio, my inaugural webcast!  It hasn't been made public prior to this due to the crappy microphone I had at the time my and "popping p's".  I sent it to Maxim, who not only did all he could to fix it, he also designed the cover and added an original theme song.  Finally decided that the music was strong enough to overcome the mic problems.  I did think about re-recording it, but there was no way to re-capture that inital enthusiam of doing your first webcast.

At the time, I was still relatively new at Entropy Music Forum (nee Club) so the webcast was a way of introducing myself to the other purple members there - music of my home turf, my current life, and my musical upbringing all in 47 minutes.  I was conscious most folks there at the time thought of me as "ye ole Funk sage" so wanted to add some paint to the picture.

So with excuses for the crappy mic, here is my debut webcast

Maxim's EMC Audio #6

"Ear candy dipped in a deep shade of purple"

More from the mixing board of NPG Vandals, here is EMC Audio series Vol. 6 - a nasty selection of the purple-related tunes remixed and remasterd, all hosted by Maxim in the 'funk with humor' style of the old NPG Ahdio series.

Ymaginatif - The Dodo Project

 (artwork by Maxim)

EMF Radio is proud to present the new solo album of the talented Ymaginatif - one of EMF Radio's resident DJs

The ‘DoDo Project’ is a complete performance of Aimee Mann’s 2000 album Bachelor No. 2 or the Last Remains Of The Dodo, put together by Ymaginatif and Maceo in the first four months of 2012.

Ymaginatif recorded guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals at home (at moments when the baby was asleep), and sent the masters to Maceo who then provided some more vocals and took care of mixing and valuable post-production (also at home and at moments when the baby was asleep).

The result is a wildly varied and out-of-character album (Ymaginatif’s second virtual album), purely for your entertainment and in honour, not only of Aimee Mann’s superb lyrics and song-writing, but also of www.entropymc.com (and its creator) for providing the playground of the people involved.

The album is presented as two continuous 320mps. Should you like your music in different chunks and sizes, just let me know.

Let us know what you think!

Purpleblues' review:

"the best way to experience music is to listen and nothing is like listening for the first time, here’s a real time impression of the sounds falling out of my PC from Y…

Side one
Neil Young meets the beatles – crazy horse vibe with fab 4 harmonies…..
Y sounds more ringo than George.. but there’s an honesty to the delivery.
And John Lennon singing the hook.. “howwwww am I different”
More Beatles resounding through the gentle melody ofnothing is good enough… Strawberry Fields?
David Bowie makes an appearance in “The Fall of the World’s Optimist”
Funk guitars and a bass solo…. And biscuit tin drums.. and a young Elvis Costello singing away.. Deathly shimmies and snarls ( well as much as a polite young man from the Benelux hinterland can)
Ghost world drifts by with a synthetic trumpet offering a coda to part one..
An incredible achievement gentle people, trouble is I’m now torn between listening to part 2 or digging out the Aimee Mann CD ( Yes, Y, I obtained her back catalogue in a typical PB 2nd hand store deal after you waxed lyrically about her talents….)
And I’m supposed to be compiling musical tapestries for a friend’s wedding reception…

But, Entropy Duty calls, so part 2 it is

Cut up swathes of guitar give way to Darth Vader singing backing to Paul McCartney on Calling it Quits.
Then we get Maceo counting Y in for “Susan”, plaintive and moving voice and guitar supplemented by a nice retro squelch of keyboard sprinkled sparingly in the mix, along with a splatter of bass.. excellent production, a highlight, esp. the reggae tinge to the middle 8..
Then a change of style to a very new wave snap , cheesy keyboards, kick drum and squalling almost out of tune guitar – It’s power pop Y style! Backfire doesn’t!
Am thinking Todd Rundgren on it takes all kinds – and that is high praise as I consider him to be a Musical God, one of my Pantheon of genius musical heroes, alongside Waits, Page, Hendrix , et al.
Rundgren channels his inner Beatle well in his production works and this follows a Bourgeois Tagg guide ( go do your research..  )
I can see why people are captivated by “Save Me” – it’s soul , Jim, but not as we know it – impassioned understatement says more and means more than histrionic shouting..
You feel the pain here, willing the subject to do the right thing and answer his plea..
The melody and mix spiral around each other, the piano emerging triumphant, framed by the fragile emotive pleadings of the protagonist, who now has a hint of stell to him, and is driving the point home in a faintly menacing way. Perhaps his pleas are not for salvation as we know it, but a darker, more disturbing release?
Then in counterpoint, a simple song, a guitar and a voice for Just like anyone… a love song that sonds joyful and innocent after the dark undercurrent of the preceding one.
Then we approach the chequered flag, “you do”, a bitter sweet tome warning of the perils of falling of a bad’ un… Aimee’s version could be a warning from one ex lover to a current one, so where does this leave Y????

And on that bombshell…"

Purpleblues Webcast: Maceo's Coming to Reading Pts 1 & 2

"Webcast fever... or what to do whilst between Dad taxi jobs"

Purpleblues says:

"OK, here's the deal.
Maceo is hoping to be in my part of the world, we are going to try to meet up.. as per previous EMC member meet ups....
but, being sad and with time on my hands between Dad taxi jobs this week, I started putting together a podcast with some of the artists I've been listening too..
however. My headset is at work so I can't record the mic breaks, so it exists as 2 x 80 minute mix casts, seamless and ready to go.
Then I had a Eureka moment., just a short piece of writing in which all the song titles appear, in the same order as on the Podcasts."

'Maceo's coming to Reading, we're gonna do Lunch, he wants to discuss his fear of meat, ah, Lunchmeatophobia I tell him. I know just the cure...
so will we end up Stoned, Drunk & Naked...

As Record Collectors we share the distinction of being born in a hurricane of people doing their personal thing, but being Gentle Spirits Under a stormy sky, but suffering from those  Ash wednesday blues, I am constantly forced to get it outta my stystem, all because I witnessed a crime  comitted by the  riders on the storm when it rains, which makes me a Doo Doo Heartbreaker out in the Purple Rain, but as M says, it's all one world...

Post lunch, we hopped onto Public Transport "Oh, here, it's No Spitting on the bus" I said. Maceo looked at me. "Pass the Peas, and pay the man.”

We get to The Spanish Moon” here, Maceo gets cornered by a local, who was telling him “now that we've found love, Blues Ain't nothin, but a  little bubble”.

As we stepped away, this ghostly figure continued…

"Hollywood has ended; it's the End Days of the Computer Age .

It's time for us to stop Sleeping in the ground and say Welcome to the jungle!"

Taken aback by this, I stumbled and fell way down in a hole... “Get up outta that Wishing Well” Maceo shouted. Otherwise you'll catch those Buenos Aires Blues.'

"Decided to do a Part 2 - no talking, just music as I left my headset microphone at work :(

So who's next ?
Welcome to Reading... A city in the making

oh, Mrs PB was convinced that we would both be disappointed when we met as the standing joke in this house is that we are all pretending to be 15 year old school girls .. One up to us as Maceo is , as expected, an urbane ambassador of the funk."

    Enjoy,

Purpleblues
