Maceo Webcast #29 - Artist Spotlight

Maceo Musicology Webcast #29

is a British multi-instrumentalist musician, born in north London, UK, in the late 1960s. He started in the music business touring with a progrock band. In 1986 he began performing as Sh*riff J*ck, releasing two albums of psychedelia music. As LT, he released his self-titled album in 1996. This album showcases a departure from psychedelia towards Neo soul.

In June 2006, LT retired from music. However, as Andrew T, he remains active in the music industry. LT has since been musical director and bass player for Gnarls Barkley, and guitarist/backing vocalist for [several UK bands].

That is essentially all that is on wiki.

It leaves out much of his recording career as LT has did "one the most amazing disappearing act known to man", took down his old website, closed the fansite, removed all videos from youtube and most of his music from the internet.

What happened?

"On the release of his 1996 debut album, LT was lauded as, among other things, the lastest inheritor of the blue-eyed soul savoir mantle. Most singers would have been flattered, but LT kicked hard against it.  His label (Island) did not seem to know how to handle or properly promote the music of their "precociously talented" new artist, and an album that was "an unprecedented amalgamation of soul, groove-based psychedelica and rock".  LT retreated to his bedroom to craft his meticulously overdubbed solo masterworks, releasing three albums on his own label. The results "blended prog rock and soft soul in dense, wedding-cake arrangements iced with layer upon layer of falsetto harmonies."  After the US release of one of his cds and an aborted tour, he publicly announced his 'retirement' in 2006 via his now shut-down website, and has not released anything since."
(wiki/cinemablend/independent/chrispickering)

However, he reappeared on a Deborah Bond single in 2011, and that sent me back to his cds.

To describe his music, I refer to a review by Rolling Stone and New York Times music critic Jon Pareles from a 2006 show:
"LT is a throwback to the one-man studio bands of the analog 1970's: songwriters like Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Paul McCartney. He skews half a dozen once-disparate 1970's styles to his own whims. Among them are smooth soul, psychedelia, progressive rock and blues-rock, any of which might show up in the course of songs that can change drastically between beginning and end.

As a pop craftsman, LT has reverse-engineered the music he loves: not just to emulate it, but also to graft unlikely combinations. A pounding, zigzagging prog-rock riff gave way to an aching ballad and a spiraling wah-wah guitar solo; a pop love song detoured into chromatic chords or started hopping upward, repeatedly changing key."

I hope this webcast interest you enough to find out more and go buy his cds, which you can find on itunes and amazon

CKJ505's review:
Really enjoyed that one, did not realise the old EMC intro was an actual song.

What stood out ; Danelleya Cotton's Rare Child,

MaXim's choice on modern funk song from Planet Funk, the Great Shake. I liked that one, very catchy with a hint of an 80's synth thrown in to catch the listener.

Mace2theO's pick on Larry G's sick funky bass beat with a host of other stars.

Overall funky and we get to hear the real MaXim. or is it? Laughing

Maceo Webcast #28 - Dayton Funk '76-'80

8faf63e2.jpg
Maceo Musiciology Webcast #28_Dayton Funk '76-'80
"Detroit, Memphis, Philadelipha, Minneapolis, Seattle
and others all had turns as a musical centers of a 'sound.'
From 1976 to 1980, Dayton, Ohio was
the Funk Capital of the World"

Dayton, Ohio, the small industrial city of approximately 200,000 people located 50 miles north of Cincinnati, produced a series of popular funk bands with a string of national hits during the 1970s. Dayton?s Black community, in the 1960s and 70s, had a rich night life with numerous bars, clubs, and after-hours establishments. Street-wise tales drawing from experiences in the places like the Astro House, Fat Daddy's, and the Ebony club frequently surfaced in the lyrical content of Dayton's first nationally-renowned funk band, the Ohio Players.

During the 1970s, industries such as a Chrysler plant, the Harrison Radiator factory, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base provided a stable income base for a population that was roughly 50 percent African-American. From this base came high-school bands who sought the stardom first achieved by the founders of Dayton funk, the Ohio Players. Their number one pop hits “Fire” (1974) and “Love Rollercoaster” (1975) set a standard for local bands to aspire to, and six different record labels had signed Dayton bands by 1978.

The Ohio Players, Lakeside, Slave (featuring Steve Arrington), Heatwave, Sun, Faze-O, Zapp (featuring Roger) and Wood Brass & Steel all claimed Dayton as their home. Members of these bands were recent high school graduates in the early 1970s and relatively new as professional musicians, having received formal and informal musical training in Dayton?s public schools and social networks with older musicians.

These bands were among the most prolific hit makers of the era, compiling more than 110 charting rhythm-and-blues singles between 1972 and 1988. Dayton funk bands all featured dance music with an emphasis on heavy bass, aggressive rhythms, complex horn arrangements, ensemble vocals, and showstopping choreography.

Slave, which had strong ties to the Ohio Players, scored a national hit with “Slide” in 1977 and continued to make hits through 1983. Crosstown rival Lakeside moved to Los Angeles before striking it big with “It’s All the Way Live” in 1978. Keith and Johnnie Wilder developed their band, Heatwave, while stationed in West Germany and returned to the United States with a global hit, “Boogie Nights,” in 1977. Roger Troutman and his band, Zapp, lasted into the 1990s with a slick, high-tech sound and dynamic show.

Maceo Webcast #27 – “Crazy Mama” Lulu Hughes

Maceo Musicology Webcast #27 - "Crazy Mama"

Comments on Triple Threat #2:
Ymaginatif wrote:
And two very very good contributions by Maceo jumped out: both terribly funky and rocky. One is his opener track and the other is in French. Candadian French. I'm not good at picking out names, so do tell us more about those! cheers

Currently jamming to the funk driven contribution by Maceo from the Quebec chick. Who is "Crazy Mama" again?
So who is this Quebec chick "Crazy Mama"

I was in Montreal a few years back to visit my then-girlfriend, and we had to go to a music benefit concert for her work.  One of the artist on that bill was Lulu Hughes.  Of course, all the artists were Québécois and I didn't know any of them.  Just before Lulu came on, my then-girlfriend leaned over to me and said "I think you'll like her."  Naturally my arrogant self expected some  Celine-Dion-balladtype music, but instead I was blown away!

So I tracked down her cd at a used cd store in Montreal.  She has a tremendous voice (and she sings in French and English), but it was her music that made me a fan.  Then I got her 2nd cd and I fell in love.

rockShe is "Crazy Mama"

She's been featured on a few of my webcasts, but have bought together several of her jams here in one show.

I did receive some help with the pronunciations.

Enjoy

Blue-eyed soul chanteuse Lulu Hughes was born and raised in Quebec, first earning attention as a member of the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir. In the decade to follow she kicked around the local scene fronting her own blues band, earning frequent comparisons to Janis Joplin, in addition to singing backup for everyone from Too Many Cooks to Barry White.

After two years at the CASINO DE PARIS, Lulu returns home to present her first self-titled solo album in 2002. Her originality, her mix of influences such as funk, soul, rock, blues and swing earned her instant success with the first single ROCK WITH ME (WINNER OF THE SOCAN 2003 SONG OF THE YEAR AWARD).   Her dynamic debut leaves no one indifferent and in 2003, she was rewarded with two nominations at the ADISQ GALA (Quebec's version of the Junos in Canada, and the Grammys in the USA) for BEST FEMALE ARTIST and REVELATION OF THE YEAR.

Crazy Mama, released in 2006, is a powerful blend of rock, soul, funk and swing bringing her once again to a new level.
Lulu, versatile and surprising, released a new album in 2010, with her new band the Montreal All City Big Band,  with 20 musiciens and 3 back up singers. The album was launched on June 2 , 2010 at l’Astral in Montreal.

The review from CKJ505
Just a great podcast...

I just adore the interaction with her majesty and you. Maybe her majesty should do her own.

The opening track is just amazing, it's Zeppelin mixed with a bond theme.

It should be a bond theme really as it just has that something very different from anything else I have ever heard. It's wonderful.

Totally new to me but I have to say 'I am a big fan!'

An amazing artist, thanks for the introduction to the Crazy Mama.

I will follow, she has 1 more fan!
